Excluding folders from antivirus scanning on PersonalEffect servers

Summary: This article lists the folders to be excluded from antivirus background scans on machines running PersonalEffect Server products.

Audience: XMPie customers who wish to run antivirus software on PersonalEffect server products.

Overview

Traditional antivirus solutions function by blocking known malware by examining or scanning files as they are written to disk on a computer device. If the file is known to the AV’s database of malicious files, the software prevents the malware file from executing. This increased file I/O can impact the performance on PersonalEffect Server products.

It is our recommendation to consider an Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solution. EDR is an integrated endpoint security solution that combines real-time continuous monitoring and collection of endpoint data with rule-based automated response and analysis capabilities to detect and respond to cyber threats like ransomware and malware. It works differently than antivirus and should be lightweight in resource consumption.

Installing and running antivirus software on the uProduce Server environment can cause significant performance degradation and - in some cases - software failures. To improve performance and avoid unexpected failures, it is recommended to exclude the folders specified in this article from the antivirus scan.

Folders to exclude from antivirus scan

  • $:\XMPie\

    • XMPieOutput

    • XMPieTempOutput

    • XMPieTempStorage

    • XMPieData*

    • XMPieAssets*

    • TempUpload*

  • $:\XMPLogs\

  • $:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\XMPie\

  • $:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\

  • %systemroot%\System32\MSMQ\

  • $:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\

(If you've changed the default location of SQL data and log files, change this path accordingly.)

  • C:\Windows\System32\msmq\storage\LQS

* It is not mandatory to exclude these folders.

Notes:

  1. The "$" sign represents the corresponding drive letter (for example, C, D, etc.).

  2. The <username> tag represents the concurrent user where XMPie applications are installed/running.

  3. The %systemroot% variable does not work as exclusion for some antivirus software. Make sure to spell out the full path name in the antivirus exclusion list.

  4. In order to verify the installation paths of XMPie and Adobe products, you can run the ServerInfo utility provided by XMPie support. This utility will provide you the exact installation locations of these product components. Please contact an XMPie support representative for more information.

  5. Some antivirus applications will flag some of the XMPie services as unknown or possibly unwanted processes. If there are problems with the XMPie system after installing the antivirus application, please check that none of the XMPie services are quarantined.
