Maintaining Audiences

Maintaining an audience means keeping it useful as your campaign evolves: previewing how each segment looks to its recipients, spotting gaps in your data, updating the values of linked content objects and variables in one place, and growing the audience by adding new segments.

Edit linked objects in one place

The Edit Linked Objects dialog box is your central location for viewing and maintaining all content objects and variables that are linked to a specific audience.

Use it in the following scenarios:

  • When you want to update values across multiple linked content objects or variables without opening each one separately.

  • When you add a new segment to an audience. Instead of opening each linked content object or variable in the Rule Editor and filling in the new segment's value one by one, you can update them all from one place.

To view and update the linked objects of an audience:

  1. On the Audiences panel, right-click the audience and select Edit Linked Objects.

  2. From the Segment list, select the segment whose values you want to edit. The table below lists all content objects and variables linked to this audience.

  3. Enter or edit the value for each content object or variable.

Filter the recipient list

Filtering the recipient list to a single segment lets you preview how that segment will look in the final piece — for example, scrolling through only the Single Females to proof their content without paging past everyone else.

To filter recipients by segment:

  1. On the Audiences panel, click to the left of the segment name. A filter icon appears, indicating the filter is active. Click it again to remove the filter.

You can do the same by right-clicking the segment and selecting Filter Records By Segment.

  2. The bottom of the Audiences panel shows how many recipients match the filter — for example, 49 of 99 Records Filtered. Use the View arrows at the bottom of the panel to step through the matching recipients.

You can filter segments from more than one audience at the same time — recipients narrow to those who match every active filter. In the following example, recipients are narrowed to Single Males who are also Teens:

To clear every active filter at once, right-click any audience or segment on the Audiences panel and select Remove All Filters (also available from the panel's Option menu).

View empty combinations

To proof your design for every variant your audiences will produce, each combination of segments needs at least one matching recipient. An empty combination is one that no recipient matches — leaving you with no preview for that variant. Finding empty combinations lets you add the missing sample data before you go to production.

To view empty combinations:

  1. On the Audiences panel, right-click any audience and select Show Empty Combinations Only.

  2. Browse the empty combinations using the View arrows at the bottom of the panel. The counter shows how many empty combinations exist — for example, View: 11 of 250 Empty Combinations.

  3. To exit this mode, select Show Empty Combinations Only again.

This option is available only when more than one audience is defined.
